How to Add a Donation Button to Facebook

Donate Now Button

Take a few minutes to add a Facebook donation button to your nonprofit’s page. It’s a very simple process that should take only a few minutes—as long as you are an admin for your organization’s page and the page is categorized as a nonprofit (if it isn’t, here’s how to update it). Ok let’s start updating that donation button, or call-to-action button.

But first, does everyone know what I mean when I say (er, type) “call to action”? I like Hubspot’s definition:

A call-to-action (usually abbreviated as CTA) is an image or line of text that prompts your visitors, leads, and customers to take action. It is, quite literally, a “call” to take an “action.”

Nonprofits’ primary call to action for donors is, more often than not, “Donate now!” Other calls to action might be:

  • Join our email list!
  • RSVP for this event now!
  • Forward this email to a friend!
  • Sign this petition!
  • Adopt this cat!
  • Volunteer now!
  • Be a social media ambassador!

When you ask your audience to respond to your call to action, be sure that when they click your call to action, they are then provided with the opportunity to, in fact, take that action. That might seem simple enough, but you’d be surprised to know how many emails I’ve received from nonprofits with a donate button that takes me to the main website. Instead, drive that traffic directly to your donation page! When donors click “donate now,” that’s what they should be able to do!

Okay, now that we know what a call to action is, let’s add a “donate now” CTA to your nonprofit’s Facebook page.

  1. Log into Facebook and navigate to your nonprofit’s page. Remember: For this call-to-action button to work, you must be an administrator of your organization’s page. Also, only pages categorized as a nonprofit organization have the option to add the “donate now” call to action.
  2. Next, locate the “create call to action” button. It’s in the bottom-right corner of your page’s cover photo.Donate Now Button For Nonprofits
  3. From this view, you can now select which call-to-action button you’d like to use. Highlight the “donate now” call to action in the dropdown menu.

4. Under the dropdown menu is a field where you will paste your donation page URL. Click “save changes.” Now your Facebook Fans can directly access your donation page from Facebook.
