Finding the Best Crowdfunding Sites for Nonprofits and Higher Education

Crowdfunding is a great way to raise money online, so of course you want to make use of it to get charitable contributions for your nonprofit organization. Or maybe you are with a college or university and are looking into education crowdfunding. Either way, the principles are the same, and the big question is, “What does it take to make crowdfunding sites for nonprofits successful?”

The good news is you don’t need to figure it out on your own. With many years of fundraising for nonprofits under our belt, we set out to do just that and are happy to share our results. We’ve researched what works in peer-to-peer crowdfunding and what doesn’t. We’ve also designed and extensively tested crowdfunding software, and we offer two different versions: DonateNow and GiveCorps.

There are many crowdfunding platforms online, all with different styles and different audiences. Here are the features we have found to be most important:

  • Easy to Use – You shouldn’t have to be a programmer to use crowdfunding software. Look for a program that is laid out in a way that is easy for you to understand and that makes it simple to fill in your information and select options.
  • Support and Training – Fundraising is essential to achieving your goals. You need to have industry-leading training and support available to make sure your strategy is effective.
  • Customizable – Your crowdfunding software should make your donations page customizable in two ways:
    • Branding – You should be able to include your logo, colors, theme — all the things that your donors recognize.
    • Donation Amount – Two things to look for here — you should be able to define the preset amounts for buttons, and there should also be an option for donors to choose how much they want to give. Some will give less than your suggested amounts, and some will give more. Set the amounts on the buttons based on your experience with your donor base, just as you would in a print campaign.
  • Social Sharing – This is critical, and it’s what takes your online fundraising into the realm of crowdfunding. Buttons with the icons for all the popular social media platforms should be built into the software so that they appear on all your pages, and the thank you note that gets sent when a donation is received should be built-in too.
  • Automated Thank You Notes – Yes, blissfully, even the thank you part of fundraising is covered by the best crowdfunding software! Not only that, the thank you message should be customizable too.
  • Recognize Donors – People are proud to see their names publicly displayed for being charitable. Less altruistically, they are also inclined to be competitive, and seeing a friend’s (or rival’s) name as a donor can inspire someone not to be outdone and spur them to make their own contribution, proving that even the lower side of human nature can be used for good!
