Take a Break This Labor Day

Born from a desire to improve the conditions of workers across the country, the Labor Day holiday began as a day to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments and impact of the American work force.

The Origins of Labor Day

During the Industrial Revolution, the labor movement took to the streets in protests, riots, and marches in response to unsafe conditions and excessively long work hours. On September 5, 1882, 10,000 workers marched from City Hall to Union Square in New York City, representing the first Labor Day parade in U.S. history. Since it wasn’t a recognized day off from work, organizers declared a one-day strike in the city. It would be another 12 years before Congress officially passed Labor Day as a legal holiday.
